The Agadir Project

Why Agadir?

Located in southwestern Morocco along the Atlantic coast, the Souss-Massa region is one of the country’s most important agricultural hubs. With a population nearing 3 million and Agadir as its vibrant capital, the region is a key driver of Morocco’s food production—particularly in citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, and olives. Covering around 450,000 hectares of cultivated land, including over 175,000 hectares under irrigation, the region has become a model of agricultural growth, innovation, and resilience.

Yet, it is also a region under pressure.

Souss-Massa’s semi-arid climate, receiving only 100–600 mm of rain annually, faces increasing water scarcity. Groundwater overuse, salinization, and the effects of climate change—such as rising temperatures and irregular rainfall—have intensified the need for smarter, more sustainable agricultural practices. Despite these challenges, the region has “leapfrogged” in development through greenhouse cultivation, pressurized irrigation, and growing in soilless media. It is a region full of potential—and one where solutions can have a national and regional impact.

A Strategic Partnership

Recognizing Agadir’s critical role in Moroccan agriculture and the region’s openness to innovation, CultivAid and Water 4 Mercy launched a collaborative initiative with the Agadir Horticultural Complex, a leading agricultural training and research institution.

Together, we are building a model of cooperation rooted in knowledge exchange, training, and applied innovation—guided by the broader vision of Agricultural Diplomacy as inspired by the Abraham Accords.

Our Work in Agadir

  1. Extension Program
We work directly with farmers through a network of agricultural technicians who provide hands-on guidance in water management, soil health, fertilization, and pest control. These regular farm visits aim to boost yields, improve sustainability, and empower local producers with effective, practical tools.

  2. Training Sessions
In collaboration with local experts, we lead intensive training sessions focused on vegetable cultivation, irrigation and nutrition, and crop protection. Blending classroom theory with field practice, these programs strengthen technical skills and build farmer confidence.

  3. Research & Demonstration Farm (In Development)
We are laying the groundwork for a central training and research farm—designed to be a hub for applied research, demonstration, and innovation. This facility will bring together farmers, students, researchers, and agri-business professionals to test solutions, learn from one another, and develop locally adapted practices and technologies.

Shared Vision for the Future

The Agadir Project reflects our commitment to long-term partnerships that go beyond technical training. Our vision is to co-create resilient agricultural systems that respond to real challenges—especially in water use efficiency, resource management, and sustainable intensification.

By linking Moroccan expertise and institutions with Israeli know-how and agricultural innovation, we are cultivating not just better crops—but deeper relationships, improved livelihoods, and a shared path toward food and water security.
